Could your kids be doing it right under your nose without you even knowing?
By Allison Takeda, Senior Editor

MONDAY, Dec. 5, 2011 — Some 10 percent of tweens and teens have exchanged sexually suggestive photos via phone, the Internet, or other electronic media, according to a new study just published in the journal Pediatrics. But even more — up to 39 percent, according to a survey by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy — have sent or received sexually suggestive messages, such as texts, e-mails, or IMs.

Sexting, the transmission of such messages and images, primarily between cell phones, is an increasing concern among parents — and though the study released today indicates it’s not as widespread a problem as we’d previously feared, such behavior can have serious consequences, not just for your child’s emotional well-being and privacy, but from a legal standpoint as well. If you have teens, you’re likely already on the lookout for red flags. But do you know what those flags are? Many sexually explicit messages aren’t actually that explicit — to parents, anyway. A lot of sexting is done in code, using acronyms and decoy words.

Here are just a few of the many (many!) examples of shorthand that teens and tweens use to sext:

53X = sex
8 = oral sex
Banana = penis
CD9 = code 9, parents are around
P911 = parent alert
CU46 = see you for sex
GNOC = get naked on cam
GYPO = get your pants off
IMEZYRU = I'm easy, are you?
IPN = I'm posting naked
ITS = intense text sex
IWSN = I want sex now
J/O = jerking off
Kitty = vagina
LH6 = let's have sex
LHU = let's hook up
NFS = need for sex
PRON = porn
TDTM = talk dirty to me
RUH = are you horny?

If you spot any of these messages on your child’s phone, don’t just get angry and take away his or her text privileges. Talk with your teen about why and with whom they’re exchanging such messages, and discuss the potential consequences of their actions. Then make a plan to check in with your child about his or her text habits in the future. You may also want to consider monitoring cell phone and computer use for further inappropriate behavior, and contacting the parents of the other child involved.

Read on about the dangers of sexting from Everyday Health’s medical director, Mallika Marshall, MD.

Summer opportunities for kids, from our colleagues in Coraopolis!

Click on the image for a full sized version.

A note from Hank Ford, Sewickley Y's Youth Director

I know this may be short notice, but if at all possible, I’d like to get the word out to those in the Cornell district about our upcoming bowling event. On Saturday, February 4th, I’ll be driving a group of 6th-8th graders from the Y to Paradise Island Bowl. We will depart the Y at 12:30pm and return around 3:30pm. The price of $12.00 (for both Y members and non-members alike) includes: 2 hours of bowling (1:00pm-3:00pm), shoe rental, two slices of pizza, and one soft drink. On our shuttle bus, we have room for myself, one other adult chaperone, and 13 fun-loving kids. Of course, if interest spikes enough in the next several days, we may be able to use a school bus from QV to accommodate a greater number of kids. To this e-mail, I have attached a flyer for the event.

Two recent articles highlight ramifications of teen drug and alcohol usage

Two recent Post-Gazette articles once again focused the spotlight on the tragic ramifications of drug and alcohol usage among teens. Researchers say that contrary to the belief of many hookah smokers, the water in the
pipe does not filter all the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke. The World Health Organization
(WHO) noted in a report that the smoke inhaled in a typical one-hour hookah session can equal
100 cigarettes or more. The WHO report also stated that even after it has been passed through
water, the tobacco smoke in a hookah pipe contains high levels of cancer-causing chemicals.
Henry Spiller, Director of the Kentucky Regional Poison Center, told the newspaper that he has
seen hookah users with significant carbon monoxide poisoning. He noted that regular hookah
users may develop long-term health problems from increased carbon monoxide levels, including
neurological damage. In severe cases, carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to a coma or death.

Original URL:
http://www.drugfree.org/join-together/tobacco/hookahs-can-cause-carbonmonoxide-
poisoning-health-officials-say
Share

Recent Post-Gazette articles of interest

It's back to school and work after the holidays. The format for the event is a brief overview of what drugs are typically abused, how children are gaining access to them, and what risks are associated with abuse of prescribed medications, followed by a Question and Answer session moderated by Dr. Swan.

NIDA, or The National Institute on Drug Abuse (www.teens.drugabuse.gov), states that, among youth who are 12 to 17 years old, 7.7 percent reported past-year nonmedical use of prescription medications. According to the 2010 Monitoring the Future survey, prescription and over-the-counter drugs are among the most commonly abused drugs by 12th graders, after alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco. Youth who abuse prescription medications are also more likely to report use of other drugs. Dr. Swan will help parents and other concerned attendees understand the nature of prescription drug abuse, especially as it relates to middle and high school students.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at the Sewickley Public Library, 500 Thorn Street, in Sewickley, starting at 7 pm. Youth Connect is a group of concerned adults and students from schools and organizations in the Sewickley area working to provide the information, resources, and support our young people need to avoid risky behaviors and enjoy their teen years.

For more information on Youth Connect and the upcoming presentation on prescription drug abuse, email youthconnect@hotmail.com.

Bully-Proofing for Successful Learning and Living

What does bullying look like in the schoolhouse? What strategies can you teach your student to prevent bullying behavior in your neighborhood or harassment in high school?

To address these topics, Quaker Valley School District has invited back Jim Bozigar to be the keynote speaker for two anti-bullying presentations for parents and community members on October 26, 2011.

Two sessions, each an hour and a half in length, have been scheduled to accommodate parents’ schedules, 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The afternoon session will be presented at the Sewickley YMCA on Blackburn Road, Sewickley. The evening session will take place at Edgeworth Elementary School, 200 Meadow Lane, Sewickley.

Learning about bullying is not just for those parents who suspect their child may be too aggressive on the playground. It is for all adults, especially those who interact with students on a regular basis in their homes, during scouting, or in carpool, for example.

Following Mr. Bozigar’s presentation based on the successful Olweus method, attendees will participate in breakout sessions where school counselors and administrators will conduct interactive discussions for parents focusing on the elementary, middle and high school age students. Quaker Valley discussion leaders will provide input as to what bullying may look like including online bullying, and how it is handled at each building level. Attendees will learn how adults can help young people with this issue. Time will be allotted to address specific questions by attendees.

“Last year, Mr. Bozigar’s presentation was so well received, we are inviting him to return and expanding the program in an effort to make it relevant for parents and community members. This is everyone’s problem and we want as many people ‘armed’ with good information and strategies,” Leah Wells, QVSD school psychologist, explained.

This anti-bullying presentation is just one component in Quaker Valley’s district-wide initiative to address bullying and School-wide Positive Behavior Support. The district understands that students cannot learn if they feel vulnerable or unsafe. A positive culture and safe environment are essential to learning and student achievement.

From our colleagues at Sewickley Academy--

Hello, everyone! You are all invited to the first Sewickley Series event of the year which takes place next Friday, October 21, at 7 pm in Rea Auditorium.

More to Live For is an inspiring and educational documentary told through the stories of three individuals all affected by bone marrow cancer. Each individual’s story is unique and demonstrates the many sides, options, challenges and hopes when dealing with blood cancer or leukemia. Seun Adebiyi – graduate of Yale Law School and winter Olympic hopeful – is one of the individuals in the film. He will be here to share more of his story and answer questions after the film.

In addition to the film, Sewickley Academy is hosting an open to the public blood and marrow drive on Friday, November 4.

For more information and to register, visit www.sewickley.org/sewickleyseries.

Brain Power

Parents and representatives from the community, QV, Montessori Children's Community, the Sewickley Y and others participated in Laughlin Children's Center's "Smart but Scattered" workshop on Monday, October 10th. The workshop featured authors Peg Dawson and Dick Guare, whose best-seller explains executive dysfunctions in children, and the ramificiations on school and homelife. Executive functions are those skills that allow us to break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Or organize our time efficiently. Or help us remember where we left our backpack full of books. Some kids are naturally more adept at these executive functions, while other kids are not. Dawson and Guare gave the audience of almost 100 strategies and tips to help children all along the executive function spectrum, in a variety of settings.

This recent online article from National Geographic also looks at the brain and our kids. Powerful food for thought...
http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/10/teenage-brains/dobbs-text/1

School Year starts back up! This funding came from the proceeds of the 2010 Annual Child Health Ball. Janet Kovac, president of Child Health, presented the check to Dr. Joseph Clapper, Superintendent of Quaker Valley School District, Susan Kaminski and Joan Murdoch, Youth Connect Board members, and Floyd Faulkner, the community youth worker. The Sewickley Valley Community Fund will match this donation.

In accepting this award, Joan Murdoch, cited the history of Child Health and praised the organization for its vision in providing support to local children. At its inception, one of the earliest service projects of the organization was to provide free milk for area public school children to combat malnutrition. Mrs. Murdoch said, “Now nearly 90 years later, the Child Health Organization has taken the initiative to fund another valuable program that enhances the basic needs of youth in our community.” She commended Child Health for its major funding role in piloting the Youth Worker position, along with The Presbyterian Church and the Grable Foundation in 2009-10.

With the mission of providing the information, resources, and support needed to give our young people the best chance to enjoy their teen years while avoiding risky behaviors, Floyd Faulkner, was hired as the community youth worker in August 2009. During the presentation, Faulkner thanked Child Health for their support and said, “Since the beginning of Youth Connect, collaborative efforts in the community have helped young people overcome the problems they encounter.” Quaker Valley School District administrators managed the hiring process of the community youth worker and are overseeing the program, allowing Faulkner access to the schools for interaction with the students, parents, and teachers. Dr. Clapper noted that benefits from the program have been seen since Day 1.

Author speaks on teen sexuality

It’s almost here…the rescheduled “Before They Know It All: Talking to Tweens and Teens about Sexuality”, led by author Alan Carson. For every two dollars that Youth Connect is able to raise, SVCF will contribute one dollar.

The Community Youth Worker position was piloted over the past year, with great success. Funding is now being assembled to cover the next three years. Floyd Faulkner, hired in August 2009, has had significant impact in this position, from taking yoga classes with middle schoolers to counseling students caught in the judicial system. Youth Connect has already received funding commitments from a number of community foundations and individuals who have first-hand experience with the value of having a Community Youth Worker.

As Marnie Haines, a director of SVCF said, “ Youth Connect, acting within the eleven municipalities, and with the backing of the Quaker Valley School District and other local organizations, is an organization and a program that SVCF believes deserves our support.”

One of the key drivers for this position was the realization that while this community is rich in resources, many of the youth cannot easily access them. The Youth Worker position was designed with the plan to better connect our youth to these resources. The position is administered by Quaker Valley School District, housed at Laughlin Center, and advised by a committee consisting of representatives from the community. This spirit of collaboration is consistent with the values of Sewickley Valley Community Fund.

Individuals interested in making a donation or pledge of support to continue the work of Mr. Faulkner are encouraged to contact Susan Kaminski at 412-741-1430, or youthconnect@hotmail.com. Each gift made in the next two years will help Youth Connect access the matching grant of the Sewickley Valley Community Fund.

Please plan to attend, and pass the word!

Two great community educational events, one on bullying and the other on our “achievement culture”, are coming up in the next few weeks.

October 21: In recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month, Youth Connect, in conjunction with the Quaker Valley School District and Sewickley Academy, will be hosting a Parent Education presentation entitled: BULLYING: What We See and What We Do. Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace; students are disengaged; stress-related illness and depression are rampant; and many young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. Race to Nowhere is a call to action for families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.

The screening takes place at 7 pm, at the Edgeworth Club, 511 East Drive, Sewickley. Tickets are $10 in advance; $15 at the door.

To order tickets, click www.brownpapertickets.com/event/124910

For more information about the movie, go to www.racetonowhere.com

ER Visits for Synthetic Marijuana on the Rise

Originally reported at www.jointogether.org on 27 August 2010:

An herb-and-chemical compound sold legally in the U.S. as incense is sending many of those who smoke it to the hospital, Reuters reported July 29.

The compound, known as K2, interacts with brain receptors in a way that is said to be similar to marijuana. The goal of the group, led by one of Laughlin’s licensed psychologists, Dr. Lenore Melmeyer, is to provide the participating teens with techniques to calm emotions, develop new perspectives on themselves and others, and improve their communication skills.

The group will run for eight sessions, and will meet at the center, which is located at 424 Frederick Street in Sewickley. Each weekly session will be 90 minutes. Additional sessions will be available as needed. The teen participants can expect to experience the group as a time of sharing and support, as well as a chance to learn better ways of functioning. Some of the topics that will be worked on include mindfulness, interpersonal skills, problems solving, and techniques for overcoming distress.

Before entering the group, each participating teen and her parents will meet privately with Dr. Melmeyer, a therapist specializing in adolescents, for an opportunity to discuss the details of the group and for an assessment; families will have a chance to ask questions about the group at this initial intake meeting. Handouts will be provided to parents each week, reviewing what topics were covered in the group session.

The group will meet on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 pm, starting on 3 March and running for eight weeks. All initial meetings with families must be completed before the start of the group, and the group size is limited to no more than 10 girls, aged 13 through 16. Due to expected high demand, interested families are urged to contact the Center at 412.741.4087 or l.melmeyer@laughlincenter.org as soon as possible to schedule the initial intake.

The cost for the eight sessions is covered by most major insurance plans. For interested families without insurance coverage, details about payment can be discussed when the appointment for their intake is made. Financial aid is available for those self-paying families who qualify.

Laughlin Children’s Center has been providing educational supports to children and families from Western Pennsylvania for over 50 years. The staff of licensed and certified clinicians help children discover learning success through a variety of services, such as individual and small group instruction, speech therapy, counseling, and early childhood services, including The Village Preschool. On Thursday night, 21 January, teens and adults met to discuss this topic.

Eleven teens from QV Voice added to their stressful lives by spending time with us to share their thoughts about stress and how adults can help them. The meeting was kicked off by Amy Keller, counselor at Quaker Valley High School, with a brief overview of brain development for parents, focusing on how different the teenage brain is from the fully-developed adult brain. With this perspective, parents are better able to understand and help their teens navigate through their stresses.

The majority of the evening was then spent hearing from teens. They shared their thoughts about what stresses them, and descriptions of how parents succeed (or sometimes fail) at helping. The most valuable message that came through again and again to parents is that it is very important that they make every effort to listen to and hear their teens – and NOT to try to fix everything for them. But just because it is commonplace does not make it any less painful or disruptive. Concerned parents often wonder what they can do to help their children manage this life change. At 6:30 pm on Thursday, February 25th, Youth Connect will present “Living With Divorce,” a talk and discussion led by Donna Bednarek, Ph.D.

Dr. Bednarek, a certified school psychologist and licensed therapist, is acting director of the Psychology Department at Laughlin Children’s Center, where she works with children and families on issues surrounding adjustment and learning.

The purpose of this talk on divorce is to help parents understand the questions and concerns that divorce typically evokes in children of different ages; provide practical suggestions regarding how parents can effectively respond to help their children cope; and assist in gaining a perspective on what a successful adjustment to divorce requires of parents.

Drawing on her years of experience as a therapist and evaluator, Dr. Bednarek will present real-life suggestions for families struggling to adapt to the new reality of divorce, as well as help those families already impacted by divorce to function in more healthy ways. The talk is free and open to the public, and takes place at Laughlin Children’s Center, 424 Frederick Avenue, Sewickley.

Youth Connect is a group of concerned adults and students from schools and organizations in the Sewickley area working to provide the information, resources, and support our young people need to avoid risky behaviors and enjoy their teen years.

The evening program is open to all community members. But very difficult, sometimes, to do. So to gain awareness to this simple, yet significant, activity, Youth Connect declares October 22 as Family Dinner Night for the community. All families are encouraged to sit down together for dinner on this night, whether at home or at a restaurant; whether over a home-cooked meal or a take-out pizza. The goal is that all families in the community are sitting down together and talking about their day.

Calendar of Events for new school year announced

At its first meeting of the 2009-2010 school year, Youth Connect's steering committee announced the following events, all of which are free and open to the public. "It's a night to set aside all other obligations, and put our families first. It will be a chance for parents and children to reconnect with each other over the dinner table--either their own, or at a restaurant, or other dining option. The important thing is the conversation and connecting, not the location, or even the menu!" "I feel it is my mission to help young children, through my own life experiences and education," he said.

In his new role, Mr. Faulkner will help youngsters find productive outlets for their time during the hours that they seem to need one the most -- after school and in the early evening.

Although he will be working for the district, Mr. Faulkner's office will be located in the Laughlin Center in Sewickley at the corner of Frederick Avenue and Broad Street.

The position is funded through grant money provided by the Child Health Association of Sewickley, The Presbyterian Church Sewickley and the Grable Foundation, according to Martha Smith, communications manager for the district. Mr. Faulkner will be paid $38,000 per year.

Ms. Smith said the district has approximately 2,025 students, with the middle school, grades 6 through 8, having just under 500 students.

Mr. Faulkner will identify youth who would benefit from using community resources and will put the teens in contact with those organizations. Ms. Smith said,

"There are already so many wonderful resources out there and we didn't want to reinvent the wheel. Having someone to help the students take advantage of these resources benefits everyone, most especially the students," she added.

Mr. Faulkner will also work as a parental resource and develop services and programs as needed.

"We see this position evolving as we go," said Ms. Smith.

Mr. Faulkner, who was formerly a social worker, and also worked for Northside Urban Pathways Charter School as the director of student services. "My primary focus was to oversee the discipline services and act as a liaison with services provided by outside agencies," he said.

He'll rely on that experience in his new role. "I will serve as a person for the students to connect to and help them find services in the community. The key word here is 'connector' -- I will help them connect to the assets in the community," said Mr. Faulkner.

The community resources that Mr. Faulkner refers to include an after-school program at the Quaker Valley Middle School and programming and services at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, The Sewickley Public Library, The Sewickley YMCA, The Presbyterian Church Sewickley, and Sewickley Community Center.

"By having this central location, I can be a very visible presence in the community," he said. In addition to students seeking out Mr. Faulkner, he expects referrals from families, teachers and district staff and others in the community.

"I will immediately begin to build a rapport with [the students] and hope to establish relationships very early on. It is our goal to cut down on risky behavior," he explained, "By using our wealth of resources in this community, we can do that."

Mr. Faulkner will spend time in the schools to meet students and staff and meet parents at open houses and other school-sponsored events. As Mr. Faulkner gears up for his new position and the start of the school year, he is enthusiastic.

"No community is a community not at risk. This is a win-win situation -- it shows that kids are really valued here," he said. "Our children will know there are people in their corner and we are there for them."

Freelance writer Kathleen Ganster can be reached in care of suburbanliving@post-gazette.com.

First published on August 27, 2009 at 7:07 am

Read more: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09239/993394-54.stm#ixzz0QWowaQJU

Floyd Faulkner appears in Sewickley Herald article

New position created to connect area children with right activities
by Joanne Braun, Sewickley Herald Staff Writer
August 20, 2009

Area youth organizations are taking steps to make Quaker Valley children feel more valued.

One of those steps is hiring Floyd Faulkner as new community youth coordinator, said Susan Kaminski, Youth Connect chairman.

Kaminski introduced Faulkner to Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce members last week at their monthly meeting.

She said Sewickley has many area programs for the youth, but the challenge is connecting the right child with the right activity.

That's where Faulkner comes in.

The Coraopolis native said he has a lot of experience he can apply to his new position, but, "first it comes from the heart.

"If we can build relationships with the youth, then we have the opportunity to impact their lives. That's what I want to do. I want to reach children who feel lost and don't have a sense of belonging.

"We need to find out what their interests and needs are and instruct them to the vast resources we have in the community," he said.

Kaminski said data from a survey provided by The Search Institute on 40 developmental assets showed in 2003 and 2007, only about 25 percent of participating Quaker Valley students believe adults value them.

The Search Institute is an independent nonprofit organization that has developed an "assets" approach to reducing risky behaviors, and has created tools to measure and resources to help educate and develop.

Quaker Valley administrators decided to do the survey in 2003 when they first learned of the tool. A follow up was done in 2007 with 650 students in grades 6 through 12.

"The follow-up was done because from the first time around, it was clear information gained from the survey was valuable and timing-wise, the kids on the younger end of the first survey were about to graduate," Kaminski said.

The survey asks students questions relating to 40 developmental assets including participating in a sport, having someone helping with homework and believing adults in the community value them. They are asked questions such as do they spend more than two hours a day alone at home and have they gotten drunk once or more in the last two weeks.

Of all the categories, Quaker Valley scored the lowest in the do you feel valued by adults question.

The idea for the youth coordinator position grew out of results of the survey and other issues targeted by Youth Connect's steering committee--representatives from Quaker Valley School District, Sewickley Academy, The Laughlin Center, Sewickley Public Library, The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, Sewickley Valley YMCA, Sweetwater Center for the Art, Sewickley Community Center, Child Health Association of Sewickley and other community representatives.

"The groups have had some success in adding after-school programming of various types.

"But the reality is that the needs of the kids in the community vary greatly," Kaminski said.

"The issue isn't so much that we don't have opportunities and resources for our kids, it is that they (and/or their parents) don't know how to access them," she said.

Youth Connect worked to get the majority of the funding put together. Faulkner's $38,000 salary plus benefits for the one-year pilot program is being funded through the support of Child Health Association of Sewickley, The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley and The Grable Foundation.

School district administrators managed the hiring process and are overseeing the program.

There were 53 applicants for the position, and the interviews started at the end of March. Faulkner, hired as a school district employee, was interviewed four times before landing the job.

"Floyd is a perfect fit for this position," Kaminski said.

"Not only is his depth and breadth of experience well-suited for the job, his respect for and understanding of youth gives him the ability to connect with them. And this will be the most important aspect of his role."

Faulkner said he has felt welcomed by those he has met so far including police Chief John Ershner and borough Manager Kevin Flannery who pledged their help and support.

"We've been excited by the enthusiasm that everyone has shown for the position and the many ideas and offers of help that have come out of the initial meetings." Kaminski said.

"I am so excited about the possibilities that he is bringing to the community."

Faulkner's office is set up at the Laughlin Center because Kaminski said is it open late, and Faulkner will be working in the evenings.

Those who have questions or who need to contact Faulkner can call the center at 412-741-4087.

******************
Meet Floyd Faulkner
Wherever the kids are, that's where Floyd Faulkner plans to be.

The new community youth worker wants to let Sewickley area children know he is there for them. He wants to find out their interests and get them involved in the right activities for them.

"I need to be visible in the community. They will know me as Mr. Floyd. Each day with a child is a teachable moment. We need to capture that time and build their self-confidence and academic achievements. We need to bridge the gap between adults and children," he said.

He plans to observe children in different environments by getting to know those who congregate at Sewickley Public Library and visiting children at the White House at The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley. He plans to work with Sewickley Community Center and has set up a program with Sewickley YMCA to bring kids in to try out the facility.

He also will attend evening community and athletic events.

In addition, he will meet with agency representatives to coordinate schedules to avoid overlaps and to add new programs such as youth groups.

Faulkner worked for eight years as director of student services at Northside Urban Pathways Charter School in Pittsburgh.

He was a Pee Wee football coach in Coraopolis for two years and a collegiate football player for Edinboro University, where he received a degree in criminal justice.

The Cornell High School graduate once dreamed of becoming an FBI agent, but ended up leaning more toward social work, moving from a management position at Hertz Corporation to a case worker job with Neighborhood Centers Association on the Northside.

He and his wife, Stephanie, have four children, ages 17, 8, 6 and 2.

His goal is to help kids become lifelong learners and to have a positive view of their future.

Faulkner said he believes area businesses and organizations have their eyes out for youth, but "we need to put our heads and resources together."

And, that, he said, will happen one child at a time.

Community Contributors Recognized

At its May Steering Committee Meeting, Youth Connect members signed letters of recognition, thanking four individuals (and their organizations) for outstanding service to the youth of our community. We presented a series of workshops and discussions, all free and open to the public, beginning in October with "Teen Mental Health Services in the Community--Behavioral Indicators of Potential Mental Health Issues in Teenagers," presented by Brian Smithley of Staunton Clinic. At that same October event, Stacie Sebastian provided an overview of Teen Screen, a mental health screening tool used by Outreach Teen and Family Services.

In November, Sandy Cooper, a women's health nurse practitioner from Womancare Associates, led a discussion entitled: Having the Talk--What Kids Need to Hear from their Parents about Sex. Due to the overwhelming response, a follow up discussion with Ms. Cooper was held in February.

Dr. Christy Clapper, a Guidance Counselor for Quaker Valley School District, led a January workshop for parents on transitions. Dr. Clapper focused on child and brain development, and the organizational skills students need to develop for success in school.

March and April concentrated on the hot-button topic of underaged drinking. Two separate round-table discussions were chaired by local fathers, bringing a unique voice to the meetings. Mark Gensheimer, who participated in both discussions, has formed a new Dads Group to further explore ways fathers can interact positively with their own children and the youth of the community.
